When I do my makeup I almost do a winged eyeliner all the time. I feel that eyeliner really opens up my eyes and make them appear bigger. If I had to pick out only one product I could use it would definitely be eyeliner. Without eyeliner I feel kind of naked. When I’m going to work I do a simple eyeliner with a kitten flick at the end. If I’m going for a more glamorous look I create a thicker, bolder and more dramatic line.
Doing a winged eyeliner does need some practice. Some days I just draw a straight line without any effort. On other days I’m seriously struggling and the lines just won’t get even. Eventually I just keep adding to get both eyes even to finally end up with a much thicker winged eyeliner than anticipated. Does this sound familiar? 😉
To do my eyeliner and especially create a winged eyeliner I have a couple of favorite products and favorite brushes. If you would like to know what they are then keep on reading!
When doing a winged eyeliner I always like to start with the wing itself. So I actually start from the outside of my eye working towards the inner corner. I also create a thin line at first and gradually adding to that line until I have the desired thickness I am going for. That’s the way how I like to do it and what works best for me. Some girls are super handy and they can draw a line exactly the desired shape and then fill in the line.
Let’s start with my favorite products!
Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner
I have been using this product for a while now switching it up sometimes with the L’oreal Gel Eyeliner. I honestly don’t see any difference between these two. This gel eyeliner comes into this cute little jar. There is a dual brush included in the package. One end is a small brush and on the other end a smudge brush. This brush is actually pretty okay if you don’t have another brush but it’s less precise. Gel eyeliner usually has a better staying power than a liquid eyeliner, but tend to be less intense when it comes to color. This one is also waterproof, smudge proof and promises a staying power of 24 hours. I don’t know about the 24 hours because I tend to sleep at night (lol) but this gel eyeliner definitely stays on.
NYC Liquid Liner
This liquid liner is used by so many beauty vloggers and that’s the reason I wanted to try it out. First of all this liquid liner is so freakingly cheap. I believe it’s just around the €3 which is such a steal. Doing a winged eye liner with a liquid liner that has a thin long brush like this one could be a little difficult at first. Especially when you’re new at this I think a liquid liner is not the best choice to start with. Personally I don’t use this liquid eyeliner by itself to do my eyeliner. This product is great to use on top of a gel eyeliner. As I’ve said before a gel eyeliner tend to be less intense when it comes to color. I like my eyeliner to be super duper black. So to darken a gel eyeliner I use this liquid eye liner on top of it.
NYX Cosmetics Gel Liner and Smudger
This product is quite new and I’ve tried it out a couple of times now. This eyeliner is quite creamy and blends very nicely. I have it in brown and it’s a very nice warm brown. I have been using this on myself to create a softer eyeliner look or on friends with a fair skin tone. This eyeliner is great to smudge out as well if you’re going for a more smoked out look. The staying power is also good and it doesn’t smudge. Unless if you want to of course 😉
L’oreal Super Liner Perfect Slim
This product is hands down my favorite product to use to do my eyeliner! I have been using this pencil for two years I think and I keep on repurchasing it. When you’re new to creating a winged eyeliner or when you’re struggling I definitely recommend to try this product. The tip is quite firm when the pencil is new, but gets softer and more flexible the more you use it. The only thing that’s annoying is that after a while sometimes the product doesn’t get to the tip completely. I really have to bend the tip to get product to the tip. But besides that nothing else than love for this product!
Maybelline Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner
I bought this product recently to try out and to compare it with the L’oreal Super Liner Perfect Slim. I must admit that it’s pretty amazing ! The tip is a little bit firmer than the L’oreal but still very thin and precise. The color is really black. It might be even darker than the L’oreal pencil. The staying power is also very good, I haven’t had any troubles with it getting smudged. Although the L’oreal pencil is my first love, I actually really like this one very much. For the past weeks I have been using this one instead because it looks more black to me. Overall a great product and perfect to create a winged eyeliner.
Okay. On to brushes….!
When using a gel eyeliner you will need a brush. Through trial and error I found out that the easiest way to create a winged eyeliner for me is with an angled brush. When using an angled brush the brush almost does the work for you. Because of the angle you can easily map out the angle of your wing by dabbing the brush where you want your wing. You’ll have a little flick mapped out from where you can build. There are many angled brushes out there. I like my brush to be small, firm and sharp. By sharp I mean that the hairs are not too thick so you can draw a fine line.
My favorite angled brushes are the MAC 208 and an angled brush (I think I got it) from Superdrug. Sorry, there is no brand on the brush! The 208 is a little more precise and I use this one most of the time. Another brush I use is also from MAC which is the 210. This brush has a thin long tip and is great to create a winged eyeliner where you want more flexibility and to be even more precise. This brush is also perfect to create a defined inner corner.
Here are two picture tutorials on how to do a winged eyeliner. Each using a different technique.
